Dialogue Loops
The Hidden Patterns That Make or Break a Session
Why Dialogue Loops Matter
Every therapy session is built on words. Yet within those words lie patterns—small, often unnoticed rhythms of repetition, resistance, or redirection. These patterns, which we’ll call dialogue loops, shape the emotional and relational landscape of a session more than any single insight or intervention.
A dialogue loop is not simply a repeated phrase.
It’s a relational dance—a feedback cycle between therapist and client, often unconscious, that either sustains stuckness or opens the door to transformation. These loops can manifest as reassuring but stagnant affirmations, circular debates masked as insight, or comforting distractions that never touch the core.
The magic (and danger) of loops is that they feel familiar. They feel safe. But left unchecked, they can lock therapy in place.
